30 "Arin" left for Africa from Cornwall last weekend, but in a
boisterous sea only 50 miles out, a crack appeared right
across one of the aft beam blocks, either side of the webbing strap.
This area is built to plans (the thickness of the wood the strap goes
round is greater than perhaps it looks from my photo as the leading edge
is rounded to reduce the chance of chafe). The wood is Iroko, as specified
in the plans. |

The
block that failed is for the inboard aft beam strap. This is the
area of greatest forces but it's worrying that it's failed on a boat that
was so carefully constructed in this area.
Rick is now fitting (rope) lashing pads on the inside hulls for these
positions as he doesn't relish taking the boat out of the water again
& stripping it down before he leaves. SB |
